Jan. 29 McDonald’s filled the hearts of bacon lovers everywhere. Between the hours of 4 and 5 pm, McDonald’s gave away free Applewood smoked bacon with any order. This included items such as Hot Fudge Sundaes and Filet-O-Fish. This ode to bacon was also an ode to the pork industry.
Everybody Loves Bacon
Customers received two half pieces of bacon on the side with any purchase. They were encouraged to add it to whatever item on the menu they wished. McDonald’s website deemed this an ode to bacon.
“Everybody loves bacon, they love the flavor, they love the taste. It’s the gateway drug for vegetarians,” said Tyne Morgan, host of U.S. Farm Report.
Much of the demand in the pork industry is driven by bacon. It is a main flavor piece and is how many people dip their toe into the pool of pork products.
“Whether it’s on top of burger or by itself with eggs, bacon is an American staple,” said Bill Even, CEO of the National Pork Board. “It’s really taken off not only domestically, but also internationally as well.”
A promotion such as this one from McDonald’s is a great bolster for the industry. The social media buzz and engagement around this promotion is more than anyone could have ever expected. It has been a huge benefit to the pork industry.
It is easy to let this promotion come and go, however it is important to take advantage of this exposure. This provides a great avenue for producers to advocate for the pork industry and their products.
With one successful promotion comes another trying to outdo it.
Wendy’s is now offering its Baconator cheeseburger for free through DoorDash along with no delivery free with a $10 order. The deal lasts through Feb. 4. To get the Wendy’s Baconator – a half-pound of beef, American cheese, six pieces of Applewood smoked bacon, ketchup, and mayo – gratis, use the code FREEBACONATOR at checkout
However, McDonald’s isn’t stopping with their short promotion Tuesday. Beginning Jan. 30, McDonald’s is launching a trio of new menu items with bacon – Cheesy Bacon Fries, the Big Mac Bacon burger and the Quarter Pounder Bacon burger.
Earlier this month, Hardee’s Angus Thickburger Melts, the Mushroom Swiss Melt and, of course, the Cheddar Bacon Melt. For limited time only they are just $3.
Though this fast-food chain competition may be frustrating for competitors, the pork industry is receiving the benefit. Drawing attention and social media buzz to bacon is the perfect way to advertise pork products. And typically, bacon serves as a gateway for the consumption of more pork products.
Pork producers and industry organizations need to capitalize on this opportunity. The time is now to push pork products and increase consumption of pork.
While fast-food chains are going whole on the hog, the pork industry is the beneficiary. The amount of exposure bacon has received with these promotions bodes extremely well for pork producers. If producers and industry professionals take advantage of this opportunity, there is no telling what it could lead to.
